What Happens After a Positive NIPT Result?

A positive NIPT result is a high-risk screening result, not a diagnosis. Here are the next steps: counselling, a detailed scan and confirmatory testing.

First, take a breath

Getting a positive result is stressful. It helps to remember that NIPT is a screening test. Some positive results turn out to be false alarms, and confirmation is always needed before any decision is made.

Step 1: Counselling with your doctor

A fetal medicine specialist will explain what was found, which chromosome is involved, and what the result may mean. This is the time to ask every question you have.

Step 2: A detailed ultrasound

A targeted scan checks the baby's growth and structure. It may show signs that support or reduce the concern, and it helps plan the next steps.

Step 3: A diagnostic test

To get a definite answer, one of these is usually offered:

  • CVS (chorionic villus sampling): a small sample from the placenta, usually in the first trimester.
  • Amniocentesis: a small sample of the fluid around the baby, usually after about 15 weeks.

These tests carry a small risk of miscarriage, which your doctor will discuss with you. They are done under ultrasound guidance.

Step 4: Understanding the final result

If the diagnostic test is normal, the NIPT result was a false positive and the pregnancy continues with routine care. If it confirms a condition, your doctor will explain what it means for the baby, what care is available and what options you have, without pressure.

The essentials

Waiting for answers is hard, and you do not need to go through it alone. Dr Malathi G. Prasad at Trichy Fetal Medicine and Fertility Centre in Trichy offers counselling and the confirmatory testing that families need at this stage.

For appointments, the genetic counselling page has the details, and our fetal medicine specialists can advise whether it fits your situation.
