Timing

Usually from 28 weeks onward, and repeated as advised.

Preparation

No special preparation is needed.

A growth scan checks your baby's size, the fluid around the baby, and the placenta. Doppler assessment looks at blood flow in the umbilical cord and the baby's vessels to check how well the placenta is working.

It is especially important when there is a history of a small baby, high blood pressure, diabetes, twins, or reduced movements.

What it checks

  • The baby's estimated weight and growth pattern
  • The fluid around the baby
  • The placenta and where it sits
  • Blood flow in the cord and the baby's vessels (Doppler)

Who is it for

  • Every pregnancy in the third trimester, as advised by your doctor
  • When the baby seems small or a previous baby was small
  • Mothers with diabetes, high blood pressure, or twins
  • If the baby's movements feel reduced

What to expect on the day
