What Is AMH and What Does It Say About Fertility?

AMH shows how many eggs remain in your ovaries, but not egg quality. Learn what high and low AMH mean, and what the test can and cannot tell you.

AMH, or anti-Mullerian hormone, is a blood test that estimates how many eggs a woman has left in her ovaries. It helps doctors plan fertility treatment, but it does not measure egg quality and cannot predict exactly when or whether you will conceive.

What does AMH measure?

Each ovary holds small fluid-filled sacs called follicles, and each follicle contains an egg. These follicles release AMH. So the blood level of AMH roughly reflects the size of your egg reserve, also called ovarian reserve.

AMH does not tell you how good your eggs are. Egg quality depends mostly on age.

When is the AMH test done?

AMH stays fairly steady through the cycle, so it can be tested on any day. It is commonly advised when:

  • You are planning IUI or IVF
  • You are over 35 and trying to conceive
  • You have irregular periods or suspected PCOS
  • You want to understand your egg reserve before planning the future
  • You have had ovarian surgery or chemotherapy

What does a low AMH mean?

A low AMH suggests a smaller egg reserve. It does not mean you cannot get pregnant. Many women with low AMH conceive naturally, especially when they are young. However, a low value may mean fewer eggs respond to fertility medicines, so doctors may advise starting treatment sooner.

What does a high AMH mean?

A high AMH often means many small follicles are present. It is commonly seen in PCOS. It can also mean the ovaries may over-respond to stimulation medicines, so doctors adjust doses carefully during IVF.

What AMH cannot tell you

  • It cannot tell you the quality of your eggs
  • It cannot predict the exact time of menopause
  • It cannot guarantee or rule out pregnancy
  • A single value can vary slightly between labs

This is why doctors never decide treatment on AMH alone.

What else is checked along with AMH?

A pelvic ultrasound counts the small follicles in each ovary, called the antral follicle count. FSH and estradiol on day 2 or 3 of the period add more detail. Together, these give a fuller picture.

Can you improve your AMH?

There is no proven way to raise AMH. Healthy habits such as quitting smoking, managing weight and treating vitamin D deficiency support overall ovarian health, but they do not create new eggs. If AMH is low, the best step is to act on time rather than wait.

The part to remember

An AMH report is one useful piece of the fertility puzzle, not a verdict. Understanding it early can help you plan with confidence instead of fear. To have your result explained and a plan made, you can consult Dr Malathi G. Prasad, a fetal medicine specialist at Trichy Fetal Medicine and Fertility Centre in Trichy.

You do not have to work this out alone. our doctors see these situations every week and can guide you.
