What Happens If a Fetal Echo Shows a Heart Problem?

Finding a heart abnormality on a fetal echo brings many questions. Learn the next steps, from counselling and genetic tests to monitoring, delivery planning and treatment.

Learning that your baby may have a heart abnormality can be overwhelming. A fetal echocardiogram gives detailed information about the heart, and finding a problem before birth allows time for counselling, planning and the right care. Many heart defects are treatable, and outcomes have improved significantly.

How is the finding explained?

A fetal medicine specialist and often a paediatric cardiologist explain:

  • What the heart abnormality is
  • How it affects blood flow before and after birth
  • Whether it is minor, moderate or complex
  • What treatment may be needed and when
  • The expected outlook based on current knowledge

Ask questions and take time to understand the information.

Some heart defects are associated with chromosomal or genetic conditions. Your doctor may offer amniocentesis with chromosome analysis or microarray to look for associated conditions. Results help guide counselling and planning.

Are other scans needed?

A detailed anomaly scan checks other organs, because some heart conditions occur with other differences. Follow-up fetal echos monitor how the heart develops through pregnancy.

How is delivery planned?

Delivery is often recommended at a hospital with neonatal intensive care and paediatric cardiology support. For many defects, normal vaginal delivery is possible. The timing and mode of delivery depend on the condition and obstetric factors.

What happens after birth?

The baby is examined, and an echocardiogram confirms the diagnosis. Depending on the defect:

  • Some babies need medicines or procedures soon after birth
  • Some need surgery or catheter procedures in infancy
  • Some conditions only need monitoring
  • Some small defects close on their own

What choices do parents have?

Counselling includes all options, provided in a supportive, non-judgemental way. Decisions are personal and should be made with full information. Any options must follow legal requirements in India.

How can families cope?

Emotional support matters. Talk with your partner and family, ask your care team about counselling services and connect with parent support groups if helpful. Take one step at a time.

What this means for you

A heart abnormality on a fetal echo is the beginning of a planned path, not the end. Expert counselling and coordinated care give your baby the best start. Dr Malathi G. Prasad provides fetal echocardiography, counselling and coordinated care planning in Trichy.

If your doctor has suggested this, our genetic counselling page lists what is included and how to book; the team is happy to talk it through first.
